ocean aliens

i only started to appreciate fish a year ago. well that's not entirely true, i've appreciated them for dinner since i was a child, but i've never found them interesting if they weren't cooked.

but suddenly, last year, i realised how fucking WEIRD they are, and instantly got a fish tank. they truly are alien creatures.

"Nowhere in space will we rest our eyes upon the familiar shapes of trees and plants, or any of the animals that share our world. Whatsoever life we meet will be as strange and alien as the nightmare creatures of the ocean abyss, or of the insect empire whose horrors are normally hidden from us by their microscopic scale."

Sir Arthur C. Clarke, 1962

i wish my fish tank would be big and salty enough to accommodate some of the weirdest creatures of the ocean, but just knowing that they are out there somewhere will have to do for now.

i remember seeing a cowfish like this one in a shop and he had me mesmerised for quite a while.
these are cucumber fish. they're no beauty queens:
i don't know what type of fish this is, but i like his teeth:lumpfish:
if there is a god, i wonder if he laughed or cried after having created this blobfish:a bit of an update on the blobfish photo; i was on the tube the other day when i saw a woman who looked JUST like this blobfish. it was absolutely horrible, she had the same pale watery complexion, a blob-like figure clad in white and dirty pastels and the same empty sad expression in her eyes. oh god, her eyes, she will haunt me in my dreams.

i bet this anglerfish played in a black metal band in his former life:
my brother says this is a "sea cow". i've never seen a sea cow before, but it looks very cuddleworthy and maybe a bit naive??:
