my old garden

I just found some photos Kat took of my balcony garden when she visited me in Berlin. It was such a lovely little garden.. An onion-themed oasis surrounded by concrete.

Music: Empire of the Sun

Nice tune, and I love the costumes, dancing and accompanying serious expressions in the video. It was recording during the day of the dead in Mexico.

nubby eared hat

I knitted this hat for a girl who requested "shorter nubbier ears". Looks more cute and teddy-bear-like than the original Floppy Eared Hat w/ Elegant Long Ears... but I approve of it, I accept the cuteness in my life.. yes yes, teddybears and all sorts, bring it on, I don't flinch in the sight of teddies.. I love the new nubby eared version of my old classic floppy eared hat.

handmade pixie paper

I made paper! I have given most away, and used the rest for drawing on. I hadn't expected to enjoy drawing on it as much as I did, the texture and colour of the handmade paper really adds to the drawing.

I used shredded up paper, paint, ink, yarn, patchouli oil to make it smell faintly of hippieness, little bits of pot pourri, yarn and fibre, golden stars and a TON of glitter. You can't really tell how glittery the paper is, but it's very, very glittery. I bet you've never seen Dagens Næringsliv* like this:

Making paper is easy but messy, and it also takes a lot more time than I expected. Maybe it would have taken less time if I didn't make such an effort to get them all flat. I always feel the need to make things perfect, which is ironic, as I love how imperfections adds character, soul and a sense of authenticity that mass produced stuff lacks. I need to remember that the reason why I hand make things is NOT to have the result looking like it came out of a factory..

A little paper-making instruction I found, just to give you an idea of how it's done:
* Dagens Næringsliv is a Norwegian paper that mainly focuses on economy and business.. I thought it was very fitting for it to be re-born all glittery and smelling of patchouli.

this time I'm serious..

Dear new Titanium White oil paint tube,
I promise I'll use you,

and not abuse you and turn you into a dirty hairy disgrace like my last Titanium White.

I promise I'll put your cap on every time I'm finished with you, and I promise to only use the intended hole for extracting paint and not random holes I accidentally make by giving you rough treatment.
I promise not to treat you rough so you won't have these accidental holes everywhere that leaves a layer of paint on the both of us, and everything we touch.

I will do my best to keep you clean so you won't be covered in a greasy film of oil that somehow never dries, but makes you sticky so that dust, hairs and random bits of crap attaches itself to you.

I promise not to keep you underneath a pile of painting rags and dust bunnies on the floor, but in the box where the other paint tubes live. I promise they won't be sticky either, or full of holes and missing their caps, rubbing themselves on you to the point where I can't figure out if it's really you or just some random - oh, I don't know, Yellow Ochre or French Ultramarine.

I know I promised all of this to my last Titanium White oil paint tube, but this time I'm serious.

(Ps. Don't feel threatened by my little new tube of translucent white... yes, it does some interesting new tricks, but at the end of the day, it can never replace your reliable coverage )

my friend Henrik Hedinge is making the news with is performance art

I'm so excited to see Henrik's art featured in newspapers! Internet fame is fantastic, but newspaper-fame is more a part of real tangible life somehow. This is only a couple of recent articles, I know he's been featured several times before. I'm so impressed with the way he manages to get himself out there as an artist, he's so good with media, finding places to show his art, and finding other artists to network with. He's done performances worldwide! It's been good fun following his work since I got to know him. I've seen him doing live performances a couple of times, and it's been such cool experiences. Henrik's art is way far out and heavy with theory - yet he somehow manages to not be pretentious and alienating, but engages the audience in what he's doing no matter what their background is.

Some of Henrik's newer work deals with gender-flux. Good stuffs.
Check out his blog to see more of his art: http://henrikhedinge.blogspot.com/
I will also post some of my favourite works of his at some point.
Henrik and I did ArtProjectMjøsa2008 together, and I think ArtProjectMjøsa2010 would be a good thing to do was well..

I've been looking at concept art for games, and did a little character design of my own using Photoshop & a pen tablet. Grunge background is courtesy of Google image search.

nervous

I did this little cat drawing in a corner of a letter I wrote to my friend Kat. I love how it's expression turned out! I find that impulsive, rushed drawings like this one often has more expression and feeling than the ones that are planned to death. I often kill my art by overworking it.
The paper is handmade by me! I will post pictures of the paper later, it was a good experiment. I like how the drawings I make on it gets lovely textured backgrounds instead of clinical harsh white.

DraculaClothing design contest - win a corset of your own design!

My friends at DraculaClothing are having the most amazing and well thought out contest ever, and so I thought I'd spread the word about it.

What you have to do is to design a corset for them. They are especially looking for steampunk corsets, burlesque corsets and creatively designed corsets.

You need to use this template as a backdrop for your design (click picture for full size):You don't have to figure out how the corset is actually constructed, you just need to draw how it will look like.

Post your design to http://www.facebook.com/photo_search.php?oid=10418434039&view=all and click add photo, they will keep the best pictures in the folder.

If they like your corset enough to make it, you will win the corset you designed!

There will be as many or few winners as there's designs that they like enough to use, and there will also not be an end date for the contest since they are always looking for new designs. A no-stress contest. I like the sound of that.

This is the entry they posted in their blog about the contest: http://draculaclothing.com/blog/design-contest
And this is their shop, if you'd like to take a look at what they're already selling: http://draculaclothing.com/
There's also lots more photos on their Facebook profile: http://www.facebook.com/#!/DraculaClothing?ref=sgm

So, are you going to give it a go?

American Natives photographed by Edward S. Curtis

Curtis' goal was to document as much as possible of the various groups of Native American people, their way of life and traditions.

There's often an element of Otherness evident in the photos taken by photographers trying to document people from cultures other than their own. I wonder how much different the photos of these people would have been if Edward S. Curtis had given the camera over to the people he wanted to document, and asked them to document themselves?

beer or Coca Cola - what is the healthiest?

The poll is closed, and this is the result..

I don't know how healthy beer is, but at least most of you agree that it's healthier than Coca Cola - and come on, people drink Coca Cola for breakfast!

I personally voted "I don't know", and managed to curb my enthusiasm, so I only voted once this time to ensure accurate & honest results.

Does anyone have suggestions for what the next poll should be about?

I drew this

I drew this with a marker, and added the bits of colour and the black vignette in Photoshop. It reminds me of Art Nouveau.

a drawing from my sketchbook

I've never had a sketchbook with brown pages before. I think it makes the drawings look really old fashioned.

I have a digital bookshelf on Shelfari

I have been very busy and have had lots to do.. SO I needed distraction, and something to do while procrastinating. Look, I've joined Shelfari:

Thanks, CarynSKA, for introducing me to Shelfari! I am all excited about it, and have already found tons of new books I'd like to read. I am especially intrigued by the fact that someone else has read The Secret Life of Plants. It's a book about plant intelligence, and the other person who has read it has read SO many interesting books.

Now I'm off on holiday, and will be reading Secret and Surpressed II. I just finished a chapter called "Wilhelm Reich, Eisenhower and the Aliens". Nice one. Go befriend me if you're on Shelfari, I'd like to see what people are reading and get inspired to read more.

Ps. Truls, what are you waiting for?

I won Wilson's blog giveaway!!!

I've been keeping quiet about this giveaway as I wanted more of a chance of winning, bahahaha! AND I WON!? Normally only other people win things.

I didn't win this:
That was Wilson.
And this is Wilson with my prize:

My prize is a taxidermy toad called Mr. Toad with a BFF necklace (one half for mr. Toad and the other for me):
He's got a very nice face, and beautiful eyes, although Wilson has better teeth.

I've never seen such an amazing prize in a blog giveaway before, so I still can't believe that I actually won it. I feel very lucky, all those four leaf clovers I've found must finally be doing their magic.

Check out Wilson's blog, The Adventures of Wilson, it is very quirky and very good.
